Aviatik D IV
Very little information is available on the Aviatik D IV single-seat fighter, but this extremely rare photograph has survived, showing the fuselage without the mainplanes and vee-type engine.

Aviatik D VII
   Stemming from the earlier D VI, the D VII did not differ radically apart from a drastic revision of the tail surfaces. Engine, 195 h.p. Benz IIIb geared. Span, 9.66 m. (31 ft. 8 3/8 in.). Length, 6.1 m. (20 ft. 0 1/4 in.). Height, 2.5 m. (8 ft. 2 1/2 in.). Weights: Empty, 745 kg. (1,639 lb.). Loaded, 945 kg. (2,079 lb.). Speed, 192 km.hr. (120 m.p.h.). Climb, 6,000 m. (19,680 ft.) in 24 min. Duration, ca. 1 hr. Armament, twin Spandau machine-guns.

Aviatik D.IV & D.V

Both the Aviatik D.IV and D.V were prototype single-bay biplane fighters powered by the geared Benz Bz.IIIbv V-8 that was a larger-displacement version of the geared 195 hp Benz Bz.IIIbm V-8. The D.IV was essentially similar to the D.III while the D.V was a new design without flying wires. The D.III and D.IV both competed at the Second Fighter Competition.

Aviatik D.IV Specifications
Engine: 195 hp Benz Bz.IIIbv V-8
Wing: Span 9.0 m
Area 21.0 m2

Aviatik D.VII

A development of the Aviatik D.VI, the Aviatik D.VII had substantially revised tail surfaces but was otherwise essentially the same as the D.VI and was powered by the same Benz Bz.IIIbm V-8 used by the D.VI. Likewise, it was armed with the standard fighter armament of two synchronized guns.
Although planned to compete in the Third Fighter Competition, that competition was reserved for aircraft powered by the BMW.IIIa engine, so the Aviatik D.VII did not participate. Nevertheless, it was covertly placed in production and the Inter-Allied Control Commission found 50 completed Aviatik D.VII fighters after the war.

Aviatik D.VII Specifications
Engine: 195 hp Benz Bz.IIIbm V-8
Wing: Span 9.66 m
General: Length 6.10 m
Height 2.50 m
Empty Weight 745 kg
Loaded Weight 945 kg
Maximum Speed: 192 kmh
Climb: 6000m 24.0 min

AVIATIK D VII Germany

The D VII, which was intended to participate in the third D-type Contest of October 1918, was essentially similar to the D VI apart from having completely redesigned vertical and horizontal tail surfaces. Like its predecessor, it was powered by a geared Benz Bz IIIbm eight-cylinder Vee engine driving a four-bladed propeller. Armament comprised the standard twin 7,92-mm synchronised machine guns, and only one prototype was completed.

Max speed,119 mph (192 km/h).
Time to 19,685 ft (6000 m), 24 min.
Empty weight, 1,642 lb (745 kg).
Loaded weight, 2,083 lb (945 kg).
Span, 31 ft 8 1/3 in (9,66 m).
Length, 20 ft 0 1/8 in (6,10 m).
Height, 8 ft 2 1/2 in (2,50 m).

AVIATIK "MILESTONES"

As in the case of our own machines, there came a time when engines became of such increased size and the evolutions to be carried out during fights in the air of so strenuous a nature that the single-pair-of-struts-aside type of single-seater was no longer equal to it. Consequently, it became usual to fit two pairs of struts, and generally to strengthen-up this type of machine. The Aviatik firm did this in their next single-seater:

The Aviatik, Type D VII
which was built in 1918. The engine fitted in this type was also a 195 h.p. Benz eight-cylindered Vee, driving a four-bladed airscrew through reduction gearing. Probably owing to the fact that the engine was of the Vee type, and that, therefore, it was difficult in any case to provide a pointed nose to the machine, a front radiator was fitted. The machine is of slightly greater dimensions than the D III, and in a somewhat modified form is intended for use as a sporting biplane, to which reference will be made later.

The Aviatik Commercial Machines
For post-War commercial use the Aviatik firm has several types in course of construction. These include machines of 200, 350, 1,000, and 1,500 h.p., the latter types carrying from 18 to 26 passengers.

The Aviatik Sporting Machine
This, as already mentioned, is a development of the Type D VII. It has a Benz engine (eight-cylindered Vee type) of 240 h.p., and is stated to develop a speed of 192 km./hour at 3.000 m. It is claimed to climb to 6,000 m. in 24 mins., and to have a ceiling of about 7,400 m. The machine, as shown in the accompanying illustration, has a four-bladed airscrew, probably driven through reduction gearing. The following is the specification of the Aviatik sporting machine: Span, 9 m. 66; length overall, 6 m. 100; height overall, 2 m. 50; weight, empty, 745 kg.; fuel and pilot, 150 kg.; other load, 50 kg.; total weight about 945 kg. Sufficient fuel for 1 1/2 hours. (About 280-300 km.)

The Aviatik D.IV fighter competed at the Second Fighter Competition. The D.IV differed from the D.III in having the Benz Bz.IIIbv, a larger displacement version of the Bz.IIIbm used in the D.III. Both D.III and D.IV suffered from having pre-production engines and helping develop those engines may have been their primary purpose. Photographs of the Aviatik D.V are not available.
