The Farman F.40 was used by many of the bombing and reconnaissance squadrons in Romania, especially those attached to the Second Aeronautical Group. Gond and his men often provided escort for these units. In a Farman F.40 the Russian commander of the 30th Corps conducted his own observation of his troops. Gond flew escort for that mission.

One of the major problems for all the air forces was that of ground fire - and the fact that troops tried to shoot at any and every aeroplane! National markings were painted on aircraft to show ground and air forces whose side you were on. The British at first adopted a Union Flag but as the central cross element was mistaken for the cross used by the Germans, they soon decided to adopt a roundel similar to that used by the French but with reversed colours (the red in the centre). This Maurice-Farman Shorthorn clearly shows a roundel on the upper wing - note also how transparent the fabric is.

Farman F.40 Brownie of the Belgian Air Service was a typical pusher biplane designed for reconnaissance. The observer, who sat in the front cockpit, had an unobstructed field of view - and field of fire - forward. The high-drag airframe limited performance and the aircraft was very vulnerable to fighter attack from behind and below, a situation that became increasingly problematic as air combat intensified. Although pushers stayed in Allied service long after they were obsolete, they were gradually replaced by more effective tractor designs.

Typically powered by a 160hp Renault, the two-seat Farman F 40 series of pusher-engined reconnaissance bombers were built in considerable numbers during 1915, eventually going into service with almost fifty French squadrons, as well as serving with the RNAS, who had 50, the Belgians and Russians. Top level speed depended upon the engine installed, but the Renault-powered F 56 version, seen here having fallen into German hands, could reach 82mph at 6.560 feet.

Первые F.30 попали на франко-германский фронт в декабре 1915 года, но вскоре вместо них фирма Фарман запустила в серию F.40, отличавшийся увеличенными размерами, двигателем, системой шасси и более обтекаемой гондолой, выклеенной из шпона. В дальнейшем выпускался целый ряд вариантов этой машины, активно применявшихся во французской и бельгийской военной авиации. 47 французских и 2 бельгийских эскадрильи летали в 1916 году на F.40 и его модификациях. Но устарелость концепции "Фармана" была уже очевидной. Неустранимый порок всех самолетов подобной схемы - отсутствие защиты хвоста делал их легкой добычей для все более многочисленных германских истребителей.
В феврале 1917 года французский Директорат аэронавтики издал приказ о запрете дальнейшего строительства боевых самолетов, в том числе и разведчиков, с задним расположением силовой установки. Вскоре после этого "Фарманы" начали снимать с вооружения. Некоторое время они еще использовались в роли ночных бомбардировщиков.
