It showed the way for the Gastambide-Mengin, later to be known as Antoinette II. It should be noted here that these numbers are not type numbers, but construction numbers, and that Levavasseur's earlier series of motor-boats were known as Antoinette I, II, etc.

   Gastambide-Mengin: There may have been just one aeroplane with this name, and it appeared in 5 different forms. All were tractor monoplanes resembling more or less the familiar later Antoinette shape.
   The first version had a tricycle undercarriage, all 3 wheels castering, the aft pair mounted on an outrigger on each side of the fuselage. The rudder was rectangular, set below the tail; a pair of masts in tandem carried the upper wing bracing. As in later Antoinettes, the airfoil section was symmetrical fore and aft. It was uncompleted in October or November 1907; when finished, the mechanic Boyer flew it in February 1908 at Bagatelle, taking off in 30 m, rising to 4 or 5 m. Boyer cut the engine, and the undercarriage was broken in the ensuing hard landing.
   In its second configuration the front wheel was replaced by a pair slightly closer together than the aft pair; the new gear was broken again on 12 February. The third form had close-set twin wheels in front. Boyer managed 2 flights of 100 and 150 m, and another of 80 m, and then one wingtip touched the ground while taxiing; the machine flipped onto its back, badly damaged.
   In August the Gastambide-Mengin appeared again, much modified, now with 2 wheels, a fully-covered fuselage, a single mast above and below for wing bracing, an odd small moveable elevator on each side of the fuselage amidships, a large triangular fin and tailplane, and an uncharacteristic semicircular rudder bringing up the rear. The pilot, Welferinger, complained of the controls, and it was modified again for the fifth and last time.
   Now it had a 4-wheeled undercarriage like a baby-carriage, trailing the familiar triangular ailerons hung from the wingtips, and the tail had the sail-like fins and rudders of the Antoinettes to come. But even in this configuration the machine was reported too flexible, and testing continued on Tournedos Island, in Normandy, in space rented from Herve Raoul-Duval.
