Type L 15

The two-seat L 15 was Brandenburg's reply to a Flars specification for an aircraft powered by the new 345-hp Daimler engine. The L 15 was a large, good-looking two-seat machine with its propeller faired by a spinner into the neatly cowled V-12 engine. The pilot was equipped with a fixed, synchronized machine gun, and the observer had the usual flexible machine gun. Appearing in June 1917 the machine was nose heavy and broke its back in a hard landing. Rebuilt with two-bay wings, it survived the war.

Brandenburg L 15

In late 1916, Flars issued technical specifications for a biplane powered by the new 345 hp Daimler engine. Brandenburg responded with the L 15 design, which Flars approved for construction in December 1916. In February 1917 work on the nearly-completed airframe was suspended because "neither the engine nor a mock-up was available" to determine proper installation parameters. Von Mises, who had been involved in drafting the Flars specification, approved aerodynamic and layout details in May 1917. When the L 15 appeared for its maiden flight in June 1917, it had a single-bay wing cellule and a compact, slab-sided fuselage. The L 15 proved to be extremely nose heavy in flight, which may have contributed to the accident that broke the fuselage while landing.
The L 15 was extensively rebuilt in July 1917. The fuselage was reinforced and lengthened by 80 cm (31.5 in). The new wing was increased in span, substantially strengthened, and given a two-bay configuration. Work was completed on 8 August 1917. Flight trials now revealed an "unusually severe tail heaviness", a problem that was not resolved until early December 1917. After test flights by Flars pilot Stabsfeldwebel Franz Kuntner, the prototype was transferred to Aspern. Phonix, assuming fiscal responsibility, sold the L 15 to the LFT on 11 January 1918. No further records of flight tests have been found, although the L 15 was still at Aspern on 1 October 1918.

The modified Brandenburg L 15 shown here on 9 August 1917 at Briest. The plywood-sided fuselage has been strengthened and the wings completely rebuilt with larger span and a two-bay configuration. The machine was powered by a 345-hp V-12 cylinder Austro-Daimler engine.
